SWEPT AWAY
Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY / Santa Monica State Beach, CA
August 2022–May 2023
The project was conceptualized by Warren Neidich and co-curated and co-coordinated by Christina Mossaides Strassfield, museum director/chief curator of Guild Hall, Anuradha Vikram, Los Angeles based independent curator and writer, and Los Angeles based conceptual artist Renee Petropoulos with administration coordination by Julie McKim.
Four curators, inspired by the Happenings Allan Kaprow conducted in East Hampton, collaborated with Guild Hall to select sixty artists from LA and sixty from NY, who were then randomly paired. The LA-based artists sent prompts to their East Coast counterparts, who, inspired by these prompts, created works/ performances that were presented at the shoreline over four weekend nights. In the spring of 2023, prompts were sent from New York artists to Los Angeles, where the West Coast artists created works and performances at Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica.
